Concrete steps volume formula

The solid wedge model is the standard approach for estimating a monolithic concrete stair block poured on grade.

Solid wedge formula

Volume = width × (N × run) × (N × rise) ÷ 2

Where N = step count, run and rise are in feet after converting from inches.

Example: 4 × (3 × 11/12) × (3 × 7/12) ÷ 2 = 0.36 yd³ net.

Assumptions

The solid wedge models a stair as a filled triangular prism. It overestimates slightly compared to hollow or pre-cast stairs, which is appropriate for ordering concrete.
