A 4 ft wide, 3-step staircase with 7 in risers and 11 in treads needs about 0.36 yd³ net — roughly 18 bags of 80 lb with 10% waste. Wider or taller stairs need more.
The IBC recommends a maximum 7 in riser and minimum 11 in tread for exterior stairs. Common residential practice is 6–7 in riser and 11–12 in tread. Check local code for your jurisdiction.
